Y aunque esto no tendría porqué suponer un problema, más allá de si tiene ventas, de si hay lectores, o de si un libro, como Lolita, genera un gran escándalo para la población; aparece en escena otra mujer, llamada Violet Gamart, quien decide hacer la guerra a la recién llegada y no parará hasta destruirla.
Violet es una mujer adinerada que se las da de buena samaritana y que, tras hacer caso omiso de la vieja construcción a la que denominan Old House durante siete años, tiempo que lleva abandonada, decide, precisamente en el momento en que Florence compra este lugar, que Old House es un patrimonio de gran valor para el pueblo y que debe convertirse en un centro de las artes.
Así va por allí hablando con toda la población sobre su excepcional y desinteresada idea de fundar dicho centro, idea que todos van alabando, justo como lo desea ella, que tiene un peculiar y único talento: ser el centro de todas las miradas y de todos los aplausos.
Violet es una mujer egocéntrica y claramente hipócrita y manipuladora, pero ¿qué le mueve a destruir a otra mujer que nada le ha hecho y que sólo busca tener una pequeña librería y vivir tranquila en una provincia inglesa?, a mi parecer no son ni celos ni envidia, simplemente es un berrinche de niña mimada, pues es claro que está acostumbrada a hacer siempre lo que desea, además de que es un intento por demostrar que ella tiene el poder. Y en efecto, lo tiene. Mientras que Florence es sólo una ilusa lectora, llena de pasión por la literatura; Violet es una burguesa con contactos que le ayudarán a cumplir su nuevo sueño, el de romper el sueño de alguien más, sin importar lo que tenga que hacer, porque como bien expone la narradora del film, vivimos en una sociedad que distingue entre exterminados y exterminadores.
Al contrario de muchas otras, La librería no se resuelve fácil y alegremente, es un drama con un final que enciende el corazón y que nos hace sentir llenos de melancolía y emoción, pues no cabe duda que la pasión de Florence deja una marca intensa en la vida de más de uno de los miembros del pueblo, así como un enorme vacío que eventualmente habrá de llenarse de libros, porque cuando uno se rodea de libros, nunca está solo.
A mi parecer es una buena película y la recomiendo ampliamente.
